Percy Jackson and the Lightning Theif

Book cover version 2014

So tell me, how much do you know about Greek mythology?

In what was to be the first of a five-book series we meet Perseus Jackson who turns out to be a demigod- half god, half human. And as he gets sucked into the world he really belongs to, he realizes keeping himself alive is not as easy as one would think.

Especially when you are believed to have stolen Zeus' great lightning bolt.

Percy Jackson is officially my favorite character.

As I write this review, it's my 4th time (I believe) reading it. And it is just as good as the first time. Although, I'll admit here that the first time I tried reading it I got bored and started reading I Am Number Four instead. I finished that one, and did not continue the series and decided to give Uncle Rick another chance. Oh boy what I almost missed out on.

I loved the beginning words. They always carry a lot of weight when the series goes so big as this. Like Harry Potter- "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much." is a line remembered by most of humanity. So the whole, "Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood." is one I will always fangirl over.

We have our regular 12 year old boy who is the underdog. Percy is slightly at a disadvantage, one would think, as he's dislexic and has ADHD. He doesn't come from a rich family, he usually fails his classes and he's been in 6 different schools. As you can see, we're setting up for something important here.

I never thought much of Greek mythology but seeing Rick Riordan bring it to life like that, well it was massively entertaining. I warn you the names of the monsters will get a bit confusing but I think you'll get the hang of it eventually. Just prounounce it as best you can. It is a book filled with magic and mysteries and the whole Prophecy thing is really fun. For some reason I like things that ryhme. And a pen that turns into a sword? Fantastic! And my gods, the sassiness! I've never loved to be inside the head of a twelve year old boy so much. And I think you will too.

Go ahead and add it to your reading list if you like a little of action with a lot of humor. Or if you'd like to learn something without it feeling like a lesson. Or don't add it, either way may the gods be with you.
